What are you capable of? No, truly, what is the best possible version of you that you believe you could reach?

Of course, the answer to that will be widely different for every person. Some might be able to imagine themselves reaching the highest heights or achieving the so-called impossible, while some might only be able to picture slight improvements.

But what if I told you your imagination reliably predicts your future?

Imagination isn’t real, the entire definition of imagination is the mind's ability to come up with things that don’t currently exist, therefore, when you imagine your best self, you're imagining something that isn’t real (yet).

But just because they’re not real doesn’t necessarily deem your imagination irrelevant. There are two ways in which your imagination dictates your future.

The first is that if you’re genuinely unable to see yourself doing something, the chances of you doing it are very slim. If the underlying consensus in your mind is that you can’t, then you won't.

The second way your imagination and lack of it keep you down is the reality that follows somewhere behind it. See, when you imagine something, and maybe even believe it, it doesn’t automatically suggest you’ll do it. There are many factors that play a role in whether you can achieve an impossible feat or not, and although imagination is one of them, it’s not the only one.

However, what it does do is arguably much more important, as how high you aim determines how high you’ll go.

As the common saying goes: "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars".

Without imagining yourself on the moon, you wouldn’t shoot for it, without shooting for it, you’d miss out on being amongst the stars.

Imagination is an efficient way of quickly determining your ceiling, but also where you’d fall should you not make it. But if you’re lacking imagination, how do you improve it?

There are only two things that really influence how high you aim: your environment and self-belief. Both can be adjusted, changed and improved.

Your environment is the conditions in which you live, including the people around you. If you grew up with people accepting the bare minimum and barely believing in themselves, naturally, you’ll end up the same.

Self-belief is downstream from that. Without ever chasing more, you never really find out what you’re made of.
