This Is Why You Always Quit, And How to Never Quit Again

We’ve all experienced the overwhelming feeling that comes with knowing how far we need to go to achieve our goals. This can not only create a negative connotation between you and your goal, it could also cause you to eventually abandon it altogether.

Just ask yourself how many times you’ve set a goal and haven’t seen it all the way through, this not only creates a sense of failure, it also extremely reduces your chances of ever trying again.

Because, not only have you now “tried” to achieve it, you’ve now also had the experience of “failing”. And you’ll have this in mind the next time you get back on that horse.

I think applying this simple mindset shift can be extremely beneficial and have a major effect on the overall possibility of you finally achieving your goal.

This is something I have had to apply within myself in order to get any sort of relief from that overwhelming and nagging feeling of distance between myself and my end goal.

The Next Step

I think in order to stick with the process long enough to achieve our goals, we need to have the actual goal itself on the forefront of our minds as little as possible.

This is difficult because the goal itself is the reason we are doing any of the work in the first place, and without a direction, the process seems pointless.

But I'm not saying you shouldn’t be aiming for something, I'm saying you need to focus on it less, and instead focus on the next step. Not two steps ahead, not three, four, five steps and not the end goal!! The very next step.

This could mean if your goal is to lose 50 pounds in the next 6 months, your next step could be your next exercise, it could even be as small as your next sip of water. It doesn’t matter how small it is, as long as your focus is on it. And as long as it’s moving you closer to your goal.

This not only removes that overwhelming sense, it allows you to enjoy the process a whole lot more, as you’re constantly feeling like a winner.

Comparing your current self to your desired future can create a constant sense of falling short and dissatisfaction.

The final success is only possible from the hundreds and thousands of small steps it takes to reach it, this work is unavoidable, you can’t deny the necessity of these steps. Without these steps, it’s impossible to succeed.

Therefore, you might as well focus on them, and feel like a winner doing it.

“Rome wasn't built in a day, but they were laying bricks every hour” - John Heywood

A single brick seems like nothing, nobody claps when you lay a brick, but without the bricks, you don't get Rome.

Bricks are the system, the systems and habits you adopt are much more important than the goal. Many people have the same goals, but the people with the best systems are the ones that cross the finish line first.

Therefore, the best way to reach your goal faster would be to focus on your systems, figure out how you can lay as many bricks as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Keep the goal at the back of your mind, you’ll know deep down what you’re working for. For every day you have laid another brick, you have won.

But focus on your bricks, and enjoy doing it.

Rome will come.
