How To Find Your Thing - Ladder Against The Right Wall
Two things have happened in my life recently, the first being finally feeling as though I’m headed in a direction that feels right, and thoughts of whether I’m chasing the wrong things have disappeared.
The second is re-reading a book called “Rewire Your Mindset” By Brian Keane, where he describes this perfectly as the ladder against the wrong/right wall.
He says that it’s better to be on the first step on the ladder against the right wall than it is to always be at the top of the ladder against the wrong wall, in other words, choosing the right path.
And that's exactly where I find myself today, at the bottom of the right ladder, and I couldn't be any happier about it.
It’s been crazy for me to re-read this, as it’s a philosophy I’ve been trying to live by for years, I just simply hadn’t connected the dots.
Anyway, it’s made me think of the process as a whole, and although the analogy is great in theory, it might leave many people wondering how the hell they’re supposed to know it’s the wrong wall before starting the climb.
And I’m very sorry to say this, but….you don’t.
The truth is, although I’m finally feeling as though I’m climbing the right ladder, I could have never figured it out if I hadn’t already attempted to climb five wrong ladders beforehand.
The information you need to figure out whether you’re climbing the right wall or not is unattainable from the bottom, it’s something you’re going to have to find along the way.
I know this may be frustrating, but the only alternative is never finding it at all.
This is where so many people go wrong, they sit around and wait, hoping it’ll someday show up. But if you don’t do anything different, you won’t find anything different.
Before you know it, you’re 70, and realise you never lived a life that truly felt like yours.
So if you want to avoid that at all costs, you’re going to have to try, you need to take action.
If you don’t know what to do with your life, find something, then do it. Don’t concern yourself with whether it’s correct or not, you’ll figure that out later using the information you attain from trying.
That’s just how it works.
Nothing changes if nothing changes, so go change something.
